This exhibition captures how the city has changed over the past 17 years and presents a physical map that reveals over nearly two decades how the landscape and development of Leeds has evolved to the City it is today.
In 1975 a Bonfire Night party in Chapeltown, Leeds, erupted into the first violent protest by Black British youth in the UK. In this illustrated talk, Claude Hendrikson MBE and Dr Max Farrar will talk about what it was like when they were accused of being involved in what the media called a riot. They were then put on trial in Leeds Assizes in the summer of 1976 - facing prison sentences if convicted of their trumped-up charges. They will explain the significance of an event that others have called an uprising.
This talk on the history and role of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) will illustrate how the CWGC ensures that the 1.7 million men and women of the Commonwealth that died in the world wars are commemorated across 23,000 sites in over 150 countries so that the human cost of war is remembered for ever.
A bi-annual event sharing legacy songs publicly and meeting others who have also written Swan Songs. Each song is introduced by it's writer (Or a family member if the writer has since passed away), then listened to together. We will mostly be listening to the recorded versions of the songs but may have some live performances too.
