Summer Reading Challenge 2024

What is it, when is it and how do I sign up?

The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to keep your children entertained and motivated to read during the school holidays. It’s FREE, easy to join and open to all children aged 4-11. All you have to do is visit your local library and sign up for the challenge with your library card. Haven’t got a library card? Well, you can get one for FREE when sign-up for the Challenge. You’ll get a core pack with everything you need to get started, including a colourful collector poster to keep track of your progress and follow the story of this year’s characters.

The Summer Reading Challenge launched Saturday 6 July and finishes Saturday 14 September and is available in all Leeds Community Hubs and Libraries.

What is the theme?

The theme for this year’s Challenge is Marvellous Makers, celebrating all kinds of creativity. Whether you like dance, drawing, music, cooking, or anything else, you’ll find something to inspire you in the books you read. You can choose any books you like, facts or fiction, comics or poetry, eBooks or eAudio and we have a great range of children’s books to support dyslexia and reluctant readers. You can also take part online too, where you can rate and review books, play games and earn badges: www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk

How many books do I need to read?

The Challenge is to read six books over the summer, but you can read more if you want. Throughout the Challenge you’ll receive stickers to add to your folder which unlock a new part of the character story. Watch out for those smelly stickers! When you complete the Challenge, you’ll receive a certificate and medal to proudly take back to school in September.
