Over 6 weeks during Story & Rhyme we will be sharing one of 6 picture books expertly chosen by library staff. The Summer Reading Challenge theme this year is Story Garden.
Children will receive their own mini challenge booklet and a sticker for each session they attend. At the end of the 6 weeks children can claim their special gold completer sticker!
Children can join at any time over the 6 weeks, a list of our Story & Rhyme locations and times can be found HERE
]]>It starts Saturday 5th July and ends Saturday 13th September, and children can take part in any Leeds Library. They can also read anything they like – stories, poetry, fact books, graphic novels or listen to audiobooks – it’s up to them! The books (physical or digital) can be borrowed from the library and we recommend reading at least six books over the summer, with Story Garden rewards on offer throughout the challenge. Once they have read their sixth book they complete the challenge and will be awarded a certificate and medal.

]]>Our Songshare events are a chance for people who have written songs with The Swan Song Project over the years (and/or their loved ones) to come together and share their songs. It is a beautiful place to celebrate these special songs and the people they are about.
Everyone has a few minutes to speak about their song and then the group can listen to it all together, either the original or sometimes even a live performance!
Our next SongShare event will take place at Leeds Central Library, in their lovely music library from 1pm to 3pm on Saturday 18th October 2025.
Tickets are free and you are very welcome to bring friends and family along. Please reserve tickets in advance so we know how many we are expecting.
Please note: This event features songs written by terminally ill and bereaved people. They can be very emotive and people can shared very meaningful things at them. We ask everyone to be kind and respectful of each other.
]]>You can expect a peaceful space for reflection with colourful projected visuals and a soothing soundscape that includes a growing ‘garden of voices’ who will share what gardening or growing means to them and what they’ve learned that they would pass on to others.
The Speaking Garden will be in Room 700, Leeds Central Library from 10th September 2025 - 29th October 2025. It is open during usual library opening times.
If gardening or gardens means something to you, we’d like your voice to be part of The Speaking Garden! We’re in the process of collecting the seeds for our garden of voices. We’re gathering audio clips of the people of Leeds answering two questions:
Why do gardens or gardening mean something to you?
What have you learned from gardening that you’d like to pass on to others?
If you’d like your voice to be part of The Speaking Garden, you can record yourself on your phone or computer answering our two questions and send it as an attachment or link to Leeds.Libraries@Leeds.gov.uk.

About the exhibition:
The exhibition at Leeds Central Library explores the transformative, enriching and sometimes radical power of gardening. Inspired by the British Library’s major exhibition (2 May-10 August), we are part of a network of 30 library services celebrating gardening through the UK-wide.
From windowsills to allotments, Unearthed: The Power of Gardening explores how the act of gardening can heal and sustain people in a multitude of ways. It reveals how gardening can bring people together, empower communities and shape our relationship with the natural world. It also considers gardening as a form of activism, as a means of challenging land ownership and highlighting social disparities, as well as providing a global story about the movement of plants.
]]>There’ll be the chance to handle rare books from our archive, as well as the opportunity to chat with staff about the current exhibition – Unearthed: The Power of Gardening.
This event is part of Unearthed: The Power of Gardening exhibition, in partnership with the British Library and the Living Knowledge Network.

About the artist:
Elnaz Yazdani is an embroidery artist and educator based in Yorkshire dedicated to sharing textile skills and promoting the importance of embroidery as an art form for the future and for community wellbeing. She has taught embroidery throughout the community, within primary, secondary and higher education as well as community groups and organisations. In 2020 elnaz was commended for the teaching excellence award in embroidery via the Embroiderers Guild and became an Embroiderers Guild Scholar after the successful launch of a virtual embroidery school ‘Embroider Your Future’.
Her practice explores ways of transforming traditional embroidery techniques through choice of unusual materials; she is inspired by industrial and natural upcycled materials and the ways in which she can embellish, connect or transform these items through stitch to develop a surface or form. Her unique embroidery style has allowed her to work across fashion, jewellery and installation contexts since graduating from Manchester School of Art in 2014.
