]]>Dive into the world of fanzines including Leeds United powerhouse The Square Ball, the global When Saturday Comes, the long-running City Gent, and the imaginatively titled War of the Monster Trucks – each brimming with unique perspectives, humour and passion. Discover how football zines were a vehicle for building communities, sparking change and amplifying voices in the fight against racism and homophobia, while championing women’s football and grassroots action.
Born out of the DIY ethos of the music and punk scenes, the raw creativity of football zines remains inspiring and relevant in today’s global game. The exhibition showcases fan-driven creativity from the UK and Ireland, and features some of the longest running and most influential football zines, alongside stories of well-known names who started their careers writing for these grassroots publications.
]]>This event will explore how the earliest football fanzines took inspiration from the punk movement and developed into a scene that saw football become woven into music, magazines, fashion and wider culture. The event will feature: lead singer of The Farm and founder of the influential zine The End, Peter Hooton; author of Zerox Machine: Punk, Post-Punk and Fanzines in Britain, 1976–88, Matt Worley; Alternative Wales zine contributor and Welsh Music Podcast co-host, James Cuff; and academic Alice Hoole, whose work examines participation in subcultural football spaces.

Starting life on Internet Relay Chat in the early 1990s, the 'List' parallels the democratisation and development (or otherwise) of the internet. Claire and John will tell the tale of a community of football supporters coming together using the internet over three decades. Initially mainly inhabited by techies and academics, the ‘List’ soon became the on-line home to Leeds United Supporters from all walks of life, spread right across the World.
Claire and John will also compare the 'List' to the emergence of other social networks and point out some rather striking cultural differences.

Kicking off with an informal ‘In Conversation’ and Q&A, we’ll dive into the journey from photocopied period charts to international campaigns, via Chella’s cult zines, Ladyfest shows, grassroots outreach, craftivism, and youth-led education resources, to the now-global Period Positive movement. Find out how her ad-busting fanzines inspired her 5-star Edinburgh Fringe show, led to her work on an International Emmy-nominated children’s show, and how her popular books Be Period Positive and Own Your Period became best sellers in Germany and banned in the US!
Expect readings, reflections, and behind-the-scenes stories from the early days of her DIY menstrual activism to today’s push for queer, inclusive, and Period Positive menstrual literacy education through the community-based project’s Period Positive Schools and Places Award, pledge, and youth-led curriculum guide.
Stick around for zine-making, badge-making, music, and refreshments. Plus, the chance to get involved with and help co-design next year’s Zine Fair poster at the City Museum with Leeds Museum’s curator Sapphia
📚 Chella’s books will be available for purchase (and signing) on the night: Own Your Period, Be Period Positive, and maybe even an exclusive Chart Your Cycle anniversary zine.
Open to menstruators and non-menstruators of all genders aged 16 and up.
Freedom4Girls will also be here to talk about their amazing work freedom4girls.co.uk and how you can get involved making reusables for yourself and others.
Come celebrate, create, and chart the next chapter!
